Demography and sociology of the Jews; quantitative research on Jewish population and society in Israel and the Diaspora.

Research Projects
:

1. Evaluation of recent world Jewish populations trends.
 
This project consists of monitoring, critique and updating of recent data collection activities and of contemporary trends in Jewish demography worldwide. Analysis of changes in definitional criteria, geographical distribution and urbanization, international migration, family patterns, intermarriage, fertility, age composition. Evaluation of implications for Jewish policy planning in the Diaspora and in Israel.
2. The 2000 United States National Jewish Population Study.
3. The 1998-99 Caracas Jewish Community study.
4. The core and enlarged Jewish population of the Former Soviet Union (with M. Tolts).
5. World Jewish population projections (with U. Rebhun and M. Tolts).
6. The population of Jerusalem, 1995-2020 (with U. Rebhun).
 
Based on recent data for detailed urban divisions and on a set of assumptions concerning major demographic variables, a new set of projections will illustrate the expected course of change for the Jewish and Arab populations in Jerusalem city and metropolitan area. The analysis focuses on different types of Jewish neighborhoods, characterized by varying degrees of religiosity.

Demography of American Jews; the population of Israel; Jewish internal and international migration; Jewish identity in the U.S.; Jewish population projections.

1. Native concentration and internal migration among the foreign-born in Israel.
2. The population of Jerusalem, 1995-2020 (with S. DellaPergola).
3. World Jewish population projections (with S. DellaPergola and M. Tolts).

Tolts, Mark

Research Interests:

Demography of the Jews in Russia and the former Soviet Union, its recent evolution and migration; immigrant population (originating in the former Soviet Union) in Israel.

1. Evaluation of Jewish demographic trends and prospects in Russia and the former Soviet Union.
2. The core and enlarged Jewish population of the former Soviet Union (with S. DellaPergola).
3. Analysis of the Jewish population distribution and structure based on new censuses of the countries of the former Soviet Union.
4. Demography of the immigrant population in Israel which originated in the former Soviet Union.
5. History of the Jewish population of Russia and the former Soviet Union.
